Fine lines, wrinkles, irregular pigmentation, and acne scarring can be irritating and make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. As time passes, your body produces less collagen, which causes your skin to sag, and fine lines and wrinkles to become more permanent. Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), or microneedling, is a minimally invasive procedure that can improve your body’s collagen production to help smooth out scars and wrinkles, even out pigmentation issues, and tighten skin that has begun to sag.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling uses fine needles to make tiny channels in the skin. These micro-wounds stimulate the body’s healing response, increasing blood flow, and collagen production in the treatment area.

SkinPen® is the first microneedling device to be cleared by the FDA. A treatment session is quick; it only takes about 30 minutes to complete, and the treatment itself is comfortable and safe. Another benefit of microneedling is that there is minimal downtime required. Your skin may be pink or reddish for one to three days afterward. Other reported side effects may include dryness, itching, or tenderness, but these symptoms usually resolve on their own.

A series of treatments is usually necessary for optimal results, and a difference may be apparent in as few as three sessions spaced one month apart. The number of sessions that will give you your desired results will be determined during your consultation. As you complete your treatments, you will see skin that is smoother, brighter, lifted, and more youthful.

For even more significant rejuvenation effects, PRP may be added to your treatment plan.

What Is PRP?

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a gold-colored fluid that is separated from your red blood cells in a centrifuge. It contains a high concentration of platelet cells and other growth factors which help your body heal. When PRP is used during a microneedling treatment, it boosts the healing and collagen-producing capabilities of your skin. The PRP is then applied to your skin after the SkinPen® has created micro-channels. The micro-channels make it easier for your body to absorb the PRP.

SkinPen® microneedling with PRP can be performed on the face, neck, and chest to help correct scars, sun damage, skin laxity, and wrinkles. You will begin to see the results of your microneedling session in three to four weeks. A series of three treatments performed at intervals of one to two months are typically recommended to improve skin tone and texture and provide a healthy, youthful glow.
